- General Information
- In African Desert Campaign there are two armies, the Allied
- forces and the German. The object of the game is to destroy
- your opponents army and gain control of the Suez Canal. To
- begin the game type AFRICA at the DOS prompt and hit RETURN.
- To skip the title pages press ESC. When the game appears
- and the loading signal has gone away you may begin. The
- Allied player gets the first turn, this is indicated by the
- move indicator. (see screen map)
-
- Using the Main Menu
- To select command use the left and right arrow keys. The
- menu selection that you are currently on will be high-
- lighted. When you reach the desired command press the +
- key. This process can be shortened by simply typing the
- first letter in the name of the selection (Similar to Lotus
- 1-2-3)
-
- Commands-
-
- Move-
- When it is your turn and you would like to move. Place the
- cursor on the piece which you would like to move. This is
- done by using the arrow keys or the < and > keys. The < and
- > keys automatically move the cursor to your next piece in
- line to the right or the left; this is extremely helpful and
- fast. Once this is done press the + key. Now the number of
- moves you have will be displayed and the amount of supplies
- this piece has. Each time you move the cursor the number of
- moves left goes down one and the supplies, in proportion to
- the amount of attack and defense force, also goes down. If
- you move your piece over a position containing escarpment
- "∞", the Nile River "■" or the Suez Canal "║" the number of
- moves left automatically goes to zero. If you make a
- mistake you can use the BACKSPACE key to backup or the ESC
- key to go back to where you started. You can hit ESC again
- from here if you want to cancel moving all together.
-
- Attacking:
- When you move your piece next to one of your opponents, you
- have to option to attack him. In order to do this you must
- still be in the MOVE mode. Type A for attack and the
- computer will ask you for a direction. After you specify
- this the odds and results of the battle will be displayed.
- Attacking takes supplies proportion to the attack factor.
- If you have 0 supplies when you attack you will lose
- automatically. If you eliminate your opponent (not in an
- exchange) you capture their remaining supplies and they
- become yours. You can only use a piece once to attack each
- turn.
-
- Types of Terrain:
- There are three types of terrain. First there is
- escarpment. It is represented by this symbol ∞. When you
- move into it, it takes away all of your moves left for the
-

-
-
-
- turn, but when being attacked it doubles your defense
- factor. Like escarpment, terrain containing the Suez
- Canal "║" or the Nile River "■" causes you to lose your
- remaining moves when moved upon, but does not double your
- defense factor. Next there is the road, represented by small
- solid circles "·". This is the boundary and you may not
- move your piece past this line. Finally there are the
- Fortresses represented by the three horizontal lines "≡".
- It like the escarpment doubles your defense factor, but does
- not eliminate your moves left when passing over it. (You
- need to occupy one of the four Fortresses to receive
- supplies)
- END-
- This ends your turn and turns the game over to your
- opponent. The move indicator will change to show you whose
- turn it is. (see screen map)
-
- FILE-
- This lets you save and retrieve a game. You are unable to
- save more than one game without erasing anything that is
- already saved.
-
- QUIT-
- This lets you quit the game. If you choose to do so the
- final statistics will be displayed.
-
- VIEW-
- This allows you to see the details of any piece on the
- board. The information will be displayed on the view line.
- (see screen map)
-
- INFO-
- This displays the current statistics for the game.
-
- SEPARATE-
- This lets you one of your pieces on the board into two new
- ones. This first thing you must do is position the cursor
- over the piece you want to select using the same method as
- MOVE command. After this is done a small form will appear
- in the information box. (see screen map) This shows you how
- many defense, attack, move and supply points the piece
- contains. The type line shows what the piece your splitting
- has while the bottom line shows what the new piece will
- have. Simply type the number of points for each category
- and press RETURN. When you are through press +. If you
- decide to cancel this option press ESC. Once you have
- determined what the new piece will have, the computer will
- ask you for the direction in which you would like the piece
- located. Press anyone of the arrow keys and the new piece
- will be created. Take into consideration while making your
- new piece that the more attack and defense point you have
- the slower the piece will move, without more move points,
- and the more supplies it will take. (Note: you may only have
- 68 pieces on the screen at one time.)

- REINFORCE-

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- This lets you add reinforcements to any one of your pieces.
- Reinforcements are given randomly according to the number of
- fortresses you control. If you control no fortresses then
- the flow of reinforcements will cease. Because of this, it
- is very beneficial to control as many bases as you can. In
- order to receive reinforcement you must be occupying a
- Fortress that you have occupied for at least 2 turns. Then
- you can position the cursor over the piece you wish to add
- reinforcements to. A form, like the one used in the
- SEPARATE command, will appear in the information box. (see
- screen map) Fill this out in the same way that you filled it
- out in the SEPARATE command and press the + key.
